Fast Three-Dimensional Temperature Measurements in Brain Tumors using Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound.
The development of novel, cost-effective imaging technologies is essential to improve patient care. Brain tumor patients have high temperatures due to brain edema and associated hypoxia. Quantification of tumor temperature in this context could help predict therapeutic responses. A new ultrasound (US) modality, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), can be used to measure intratumoral temperatures, but its feasibility for long-term monitoring is uncertain. We therefore aimed to measure tumor temperature in CEUS-guided measurements, both longitudinally and in patient response to radiotherapy. In an experimental setting, two tumor-bearing mice were imaged using CEUS and US thermometry. Temperature was measured at intervals during laser-induced heating. A patient with a right basal-frontal meningioma was monitored longitudinally using CEUS and US thermometry. Thermocouples were placed in the tumor, and temperatures were measured for comparison. In the animal experiments, the combination of CEUS and US thermometry was able to measure temperature with an accuracy of 5.6°C. Thermocouple measurements showed similar temperature profiles. In the patient, long-term monitoring with CEUS was possible, and temperatures in areas of tumor growth showed a decrease in temperature after 5 months of radiotherapy. This shows that CEUS can be used for long-term tumor temperature measurements and therefore has great potential for monitoring responses to therapies, such as radiotherapy.Saturday, October 13, 2010
It's probably been six months since I posted here. Not that it hasn't been fun. It's just I've been having more fun lately watching National Treasure movies, where the heros face off against everyone from ISIS to KGB. I'm also looking forward to going to see John Carter this week. I'm not too excited about the reviews, but I'm excited to see some of the special effects, which I'm told were great.
I'm keeping busy, but I've been struggling lately because of a lot of things that have happened lately. (Not just going through a rough time of it.) First, I started my new job. It's a full-time job, which will help ac619d1d87
